Before you go

Kodachrome Basin State Park

It was originally known as Chimney Rock State Park. But after some National Geographic Society photographers saw the unbelievable colors, they nicknamed it Kodachrome Flat after the Kodak film. Eventually, the name was changed to Kodachrome Basin State Park where hikers, mountain bikers, horseback riders, and campers abound. One of the highlights is the 67 towering spires (aka sedimentary pipes) that range in height from 6 to 170 feet. Not too sprawling, the entire park can be explored in less than a day.
